Hand in Hand were honoured to be invited to the return to the wild of Hero and her companion Samson. We were asked to send along an assistant to help with the release and were delighted to invite Ronan Gilhool who was recovering
from recent surgery for cancer. Weighing in at 35.5kg in the female corner was Galway Girl Hero. At 37kg in the male corner, Samson. Separated from their Mums in early June, Hero in Rinville, Oranmore and Samson in Donegal when they were united by the Irish Seal Sanctuary, their fates were sealed.
Hero and Samson delighted crowds as they flopped their way to the sea and posed among the seaweed, obviously happy to be home. After a few minutes ducking under the waves Samson could be seen going deeper into the sea until he was out of sight, while Hero was happy to entertain before eventually disappearing to reacquaint herself with Galway Bay.
To quote a young child at the Salthill release last Sunday ‘Bye Bye Hero, I will never forget you’.
Our thanks to all involved for giving Ronan such a special day.
